Innovation for You

The global turnout expert

Reduced in size, tamping machines carry out a complete control measurement nonetheless – thanks to compact measuring equipment.

At first sight, the Unimat 08-4x4/4S stands out from the many yellow machines due to its eye-catching new design. When taking a closer look at the details, a significant innovation comes into focus. No, it is not the new turnout assistant, even though it is an achievement. However, other universal tamping machines such as the 09-4x4/4S E³ have also been fitted with the assistant.

In its basic version, the Unimat 08-4x4/4S is a highly compact tamping machine. Without requiring an additional trailer, it carries out a complete control measurement of the track geometry. Work results are documented using the new inertial measuring technology. It records the known space curve that also requires a relation to the rails. Then, virtually everything we want to know about the track geometry can be displayed in real time. Using the new technology, a separate trailer as carrier of the additional measuring axles is no longer needed.

With or without trailer?

The measuring equipment does not require a trailer as carrier vehicle. However, there are other reasons to use a trailer. Three trailer options have been developed. Meeting the demand for customised equipment, they demonstrate the wide variety offered by Plasser & Theurer. This enables you to adapt the Unimat 08-4x4/4S to your individual needs. With or without sweeper unit, ballast hopper or as a material wagon: National requirements vary widely, just like the equipment available for the Unimat 08-4x4/4S.

Maintaining turnouts with Plasser & Theurer quality

Modern high-capacity turnouts are massive and, at the same time, delicate infrastructure components. On show at iaf, the Unimat 08-4x4/4S, Unimat 09-4x4/4S E³ and the Unimat Combi 08-275 are state-of-the-art instruments meeting the latest development standards to maintain these costly components with high quality and efficiency. The framework conditions such as track possessions and operating times for new installations and maintenance works are often scheduled to take place in short time windows. Point machines, cable ducts and heating elements are further challenges.

Plasser & Theurer machines offer pivoting work units. Fitted with Split Head technology, they can be split in longitudinal direction of the track and displaced laterally. The tamping tines are in tilting design. The rotation speed modulation enables effective tamping in hardened ballast beds, causing low wear. Variable devices for lifting and lining the rails grip either at the rail foot or the rail web and can be displaced laterally in obstacles. In heavy concrete-sleepered turnouts, particularly in long bearers, the additional lifting device for the third rail is used.

This equipment ensures high-quality maintenance in tracks and turnouts.
