Cutting-edge machine technology for expansion and maintenance

As reported in today 141, Poland is investing extensively in the sustainable modernization of its railway infrastructure. Plasser & Theurer has supplied numerous machines to Polish companies to this end in recent years.

Pioneering technologies will also be put on track in 2024: tamping machines, ballast distribution machines, material conveyor and hopper units, machines for maintaining the overhead contact line, as well as a Plasser CatenaryLiner 300 catenary installation machine for PPM-T and a Plasser ScreenLiner 3120 L N Dynamic ballast cleaning machine for ZRK-DOM.

Globally proven ballast cleaning in a new, modular design

The Plasser ScreenLiner 3120 L N Dynamic is the first machine in a further developed series of ballast cleaning systems to join the fleet of ZRK-DOM, a subsidiary of the Polish State Railways. The ScreenLiner 3100 series is based on the time-tested RM 80 technology that has won over customers in 40 countries. It embodies an unbeatable combination: precisely cutting the formation over the entire width of the ballast bed and high recovery rates combined with the new arrangement of the power wagon and the resulting improved ergonomics. To meet the requirements of ZRK-DOM, the machine was customized and equipped with many additional features and functional enhancements.

Equipped for a wide range of applications and work documentation

Cleaning the turnout area is often only possible by removing the turnout. Thanks to a functional enhancement, the Plasser ScreenLiner can do this continuously and without removing the turnout. The cleaned ballast is inserted precisely over the entire working width using slewing conveyors. Integrated dynamic track stabilization is a further process step included in the ballast cleaning process. This saves an additional subsequent work step. The track geometry measuring and recording system in conjunction with the DRP Data Recording Processor provides information on key track geometry parameters both during and after ballast bed cleaning. All values relating to work quality and ballast formation are documented in a user-friendly way and make proof reports more precise.

Advantages for cost efficiency, ecofriendliness, and logistics

Thanks to the integrated new-ballast supply system, construction site logistics become much simpler and track possessions can be used more efficiently. Six MFS 120 SCs were already delivered in 2023. They are coupled to the ScreenLiner 3120 L N Dynamic and can supply the machine with new ballast or pick up spoil. This means that the complete material logistics are handled via the track under construction, making countless lorry runs and access road construction a thing of the past. All of this protects the environment. A workshop and crew cab, which can also be used as an on-board office, was also installed to protect staff from weather and train traffic.

A second catenary installation machine for Poland

Catenary installation and renewal machines are sought-out special tools for assembling the contact wire and the carrying cable. The company has already delivered 20 machines worldwide, and this is the second machine for this field of application in Poland. An FUM 100.051 catenary installation machine has been in use for the Polish railway infrastructure manager PKP Energetyka since 1999. Highly satisfied with this machine, PPM-T decided to purchase a Plasser & Theurer machine too.

Systematic development of a successful system

The Plasser CatenaryLiner 300 is a further development of the globally time-tested FUM series. The carrier vehicle with a distance between bogie pivots of 15.4 m has a modular design and offers space in the vehicle frame for important assemblies that are easily accessible and can be replaced quickly during servicing and maintenance. These include the diesel-hydraulic powerpack, which feeds the hydrostatic drive with high traction on all four axles. The Plasser CatenaryLiner 300 has two driving control stations and can now travel at a maximum speed of 100 km/h in both directions of travel.
