ModularCustomizing opens up new benefits

Compact tamping machines featuring the same quality as large Plasser & Theurer machines: that is exactly why our CompactTampers have been appreciated all over the world for decades. Now we have completely re-engineered these new machines with ModularCustomizing. This reduces costs, delivery times, and provides for an easier supply of spare parts.

8 million tamping cycles in 40 years and still going strong: the Duomatic 07-32 of the Polish railway is living proof of the quality of Plasser & Theurer tamping machines. This type of machine also started the worldwide success story of our CompactTampers. Over 500 of these have been delivered already. They enjoy continued popularity, both with operating companies and machine operators. Why?

The full quality of large machines in a compact design

Plasser & Theurer is not the only supplier of compact tamping machines. But we are the manufacturer that also attaches great importance to high-quality design in this category and uses components for railway applications wherever it is necessary. A crucial fact, for the robustness achieved with these means reliable operability in all conditions: be it in the tropics or in the cold regions of the North. CompactTampers by Plasser & Theurer work smoothly and offer the safety and comfort that machine operators deserve.

These basic benefits will of course remain after the current re-engineering to the ModularCustomizing principle. But there are a number of new features, due to this modularization on the one hand and new design characteristics and technologies on the other.

ModularCustomizing opens up new horizons of economic efficiency

ModularCustomizing by Plasser & Theurer means a completely new take on standardizing components, systems, and assemblies consistently. This enables us to adapt each single machine to the customer’s requirements to a high degree. For example, CompactTampers can be designed as 1- or 2-sleeper machines or as plain-line or universal tamping machines. At the same time, this opens up new categories of benefits and reduces delivery times of the CompactTampers. The increased efficiency in servicing and supply of spare and wear parts pays off during operation. These are benefits that increase machine availability and cost efficiency over the entire life cycle. And finally, our ModularCustomizing also makes our machines more future-proof. Refurbishments, retrofits, and upgrades will be much easier and thus more cost-efficient thanks to the current standardization, continuous development, and the integration of standardized interfaces.

New design features improve quality

New designs, such as the positioning of the levelling chord outside the cab, make our CompactTampers safer and more ergonomic. Another important feature that distinguishes them from other machines on the market is the standardized design with at least two cabs, which naturally match the new design for the large machines. In running mode, this creates optimum visibility, expands the air-conditioned space, and provides additional areas that can be locked. If requested, the rear cab can be extended to integrate additional functionalities, such as digital products. Equally, all CompactTampers now have the option of increased functionality thanks to trailers with different equipment.

In order to be able to deploy these machines in practically all areas, they are designed in track gauges ranging from 1,000 to 1,676 mm. In addition, there is the option of gauge change kits that can be used to convert individual machines for different track gauges. These kits are available in two variants, a basic version for only occasional gauge changes and a complete version where the gauge needs to be changed on a regular basis and therefore has to be done more quickly.

A huge benefit for the maintenance of the machines is now that all components can be accessed from below - no more climbing onto the roof. For some of the regular inspections, a hydraulic platform was required previously. Accessibility was optimized further for checking the filters and filling levels.

New technologies improve functionality and cost efficiency

We continue to rely on different engine manufacturers. The final decision is with the customer, who can select water-cooled engines of classes COM III A and EU Stage V. A maximum speed of 80 km/h in running mode is unsurpassed in the industry and is one of the big efficiency features of the CompactTampers. From a technological viewpoint, it is two innovations in particular that make our CompactTampers cutting-edge tamping machines: the speed control of the tamping units and the new P-IC control. The former makes it easier to penetrate extremely encrusted ballast. At the same time, the speed control reduces wear, fuel consumption, and noise during tamping. The new P-IC control system equals that of the large Plasser & Theurer machines, a harmonization that provides noticeable benefits in training. As the new control system makes do with fewer components, the storage of spare parts is also simplified. In addition, the new system enables the integration of digital products such as SmartALC, DRP, Datamatic, and Plasser TampingControl currently and in future.

New design enhances sustainability

The CompactTampers from Plasser & Theurer combine the benefits of our ModularCustomizing with those of new design features and technological innovations. The bottom line is that these quality aspects also contribute to enhancing the sustainability of these machines. Think of the reduction in fuel consumption thanks to the speed control of the tamping units or the possibility to use environmentally-compatible hydraulic oils. The fact remains that the robust construction, the high-quality materials, and railway-suitable components make our CompactTampers into machines with extremely long service lives - key from a sustainability point of view. These machines will still work cost-efficiently after decades of operation.
