Multipurpose machine in 64 mm track gauge

The Museo Nazionale Ferroviario di Pietrarsa is the central Italian railway museum. It is located on the outskirts of Naples, directly next to the first Italian railway line, connecting Naples–Portici–Salerno. For the first time, a track maintenance machine from Plasser & Theurer is on exhibition.

22.5 times smaller than the original and standing on rails with a gauge of only 64 mm, a scale model of an Unimat Combi 08-275 multipurpose track tamping machine was handed over to the museum in a ceremony attended by the Director Avv. Oreste Orvitti on 17 May 2018.

The original machine combines a track and turnout tamping machine with the functions of a ballast plough and a sweeper brush. Fitted with an inertial measuring system, the machine can also be used as a non-contacting track inspection vehicle for the recording of the track geometry at high speed.

Rete Ferroviaria Italiana S.p.A. placed a production order for 13 machines. The machines are operated by various local railway departments. Using the train safety system aboard the machines, they can travel independently as trains. In addition to scheduled maintenance works, the machines can be used for condition-based maintenance (CBM) of the track infrastructure.
